Although we setup our Solihull design studio in January, we’ve finally had time to take our new website live. It’s always a challenge for creative design studios to find the time to create their own collateral; ask anyone in our industry and they will tell you that it’s difficult to fit their own work in-between client work!
Often companies such as ours simply do not have the in-house resource to develop their own website - the reality is they are often created by third-parties such as freelancers. However, with such strong internal web development skills, this was simply not going to be an option for us. We are too precious about code quality and responsive design to put this out to external suppliers.
It has taken us some time to get our website designed and developed - but we treated it just like a client project. It was taken through our complete digital production process, involving planning and wire-framing, creative design and full bespoke coding.
We chose to build our site on WordPress as it’s a platform that allows easy editing and publishing of content. This is a platform we often use to build websites with for our clients, so it only seemed right that we should create our own website on this awesome platform! Jonny, who heads up digital and web at Wider, has been working with this platform for over a decade. He's developed a number of free Open Source projects for WordPress and speaks at various tech conferences on this subject.
All of the client sites we build are built bespoke - we do not use any third-party commercial themes, they are overloaded with unnecessary options and ultimately perform slowly. The only real solution is to build a complete bespoke WordPress theme to purpose.
We empower clients to take charge of their websites. WordPress is good out of the box - but we combine this with a number of in-house modifications and extensions to deliver a very rich user-centric focused editing experience that makes creating complex page structure builds a breeze.
